Oct. 17 (UPI) — In an extraordinary feat, a cat from Britain has broken a Guinness World Record with its deafening purr measuring 54.59 decibels.
The record-breaking feline, Bella, resides with Nicole Spink in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. She was awarded the title for the loudest purr by a living domestic cat after her purr was meticulously measured by a Guinness World Records adjudicator and an acoustic engineer. Spink shared, “She purrs all day long! Whether it’s mealtime, cuddle time, or even while watching TV, Bella never fails to produce her loud and distinctive purring sound. My late husband would often complain that her purr disrupted the audio from the television during the evenings.”
The previous benchmark for the record was set at 50 decibels, a threshold Bella comfortably surpassed. While her 54.59-decibel purr secured her the accolade for the loudest purr by a living domestic cat, the all-time record-holder claimed an astonishing 67.8 decibels.
In 2011, a cat named Smokey, owned by Lucinda Ruth Adams from Northampton, England, achieved the highest recorded purr. This record was later matched by Merlin, owned by Tracy Westwood from Devon, England, in 2016. Though both Smokey and Merlin have since passed away, they are still jointly recognized as the record-holders for the loudest purr by a domestic cat.
