A colt by Practical Joke from the mare Awesome Again and a colt by Violence from the mare Liam’s Map were the standout performers, each fetching $380,000 in the sale. A total of 217 Thoroughbred yearlings were sold, accumulating a gross of $20.6 million. This represents a 3.1% increase from last year’s record-breaking sale when 188 yearlings brought in $20.1 million.
The Violence colt took the spotlight on Sunday, while the Practical Joke colt stole the show on Monday. The Violence colt was purchased by bloodstock agent Chris Baccari, who teamed up with trainer Kenny McPeek, on behalf of country singer Toby Keith. Out of Liam’s Lookout, the colt will receive a name upon Jockey Club registration. It’s worth noting that the same stallion produced Forte, a 3-year-old horse and one of the top contenders in the upcoming $1.25 million Grade I Travers Stakes on August 26. The colt consigned by Hill ‘n Dale at Xalapa garnered significant attention.
The Practical Joke colt, on the other hand, is out of the mare Golden Mystery, who is a descendant of the impressive Awesome Again bloodline. Golden Mystery had a successful racing career, earning over half a million dollars, including a victory in Gulfstream Park’s Grade III Hurricane Bertie Stakes.
Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning expressed his satisfaction with the sale, stating, “We concluded another very successful New York Bred Yearling Sale. It continued the strength and momentum that we witnessed in recent years at this sale and also the strength we saw throughout the selected sale last week.”
