Reconsidering Incinerators as a Waste Management Solution

I am writing in response to your editorial “Running out of landfills” (7/16/23). I reside in Baguio City, where the cost of transporting waste to landfills is even higher due to the necessity of transporting it to other municipalities in different provinces and paying substantial fees.

The Philippines is the only country in the world that has banned incinerators since 1999. We were convinced that this was necessary to protect the environment, while other countries were utilizing incinerators to dispose of their waste. However, over the past 24 years, we have depleted our land resources to accommodate our waste.

It is time for us to reconsider the use of incinerators and reassess the potential pollution they may generate. I urge the authorities to do so.

Modern incinerators are highly efficient. Take the incinerators in Singapore as an example. They not only have safe emissions, but they also generate electricity.
