When Swedish star Rebecca Ferguson joined the “Mission: Impossible” franchise with 2015’s “Rogue Nation,” fans instantly fell for her formidable British spy, Ilsa Faust. And they weren’t the only ones: Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt was charmed by her as well.
However, in an interview with Insider ahead of the release of “Dead Reckoning Part One,” Ferguson clarified that Faust and Hunt are not in a romantic relationship because it would be monotonous to divide the cast into couples.
“I’ve never discussed the relationship with Tom, as we simply work with what is presented on screen. There’s no hidden agenda of creating couples,” explained Ferguson.
She continued, “We are professionals who appreciate and support each other. We possess a complex range of experiences in life, and despite our affection, we still prioritize ourselves.”
The “Dune” star drew a parallel between Ilsa and Ethan’s dynamic and their relationships with other members of the IMF team like Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg).
“If we remove gender from the equation, we can observe a similar dynamic between Benji and Tom,” she stated.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Cruise’s character has not shared any romantic moments with his other teammates. Ferguson mentioned the deleted scene from “Fallout” in 2018, where Ilsa kissed Ethan.
“We all have those moments, you know. The kiss was simply because I enjoy kissing Tom! They had to remove it again!” Ferguson exclaimed.
Pegg added that a tender moment between Ilsa and Ethan in “Dead Reckoning” could have easily featured his character instead.
“I believe there could have been a scene with Benji and Ethan cuddling on the balcony,” Pegg suggested.
“If it suddenly became a typical romance, it would undermine the uniqueness of our characters. We strive to be unconventional,” Pegg concluded.
