Reality TV Stars’ Sentences Get a Shorter but Impactful Makeover

Todd and Julie Chrisley, known for their reality TV show “Chrisley Knows Best”, are serving shorter sentences than originally imposed by a federal court in November. According to records, Todd Chrisley’s release date from prison has been moved up to January 22, 2033, two years earlier than expected, as reported by USA Today. Julie Chrisley will be released on October 19, 2028, about a year sooner than previously scheduled. The decision to reduce their sentences was made by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, partly due to the nonviolent nature of their offenses. Their lawyer, Jay Surgent, stated that Todd and Julie are model incarcerated individuals who received excessive sentences, according to Insider. Federal guidelines allow for sentence reductions for reasons such as good behavior and completion of certain programs.

Reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after being convicted in June on charges including bank fraud, tax evasion, and conspiring to defraud the IRS, according to the AP. Todd Chrisley received a prison sentence of 12 years plus 16 months of probation, while Julie Chrisley was sentenced to seven years behind bars and 16 months of probation. The Chrisleys gained fame through their show “Chrisley Knows Best”, which follows their close-knit and lively family. Federal prosecutors accused the couple of engaging in an extensive bank fraud scheme and evading taxes while flaunting their extravagant lifestyle.

Prosecutors described the Chrisleys as career swindlers who have built their empire on lies and fraud. They argued that the couple has made a living by perpetuating fraud schemes, deceiving banks, avoiding taxes, and stiffing vendors. Todd Chrisley’s attorneys argued that a sentence of more than nine years would be unjust. On the other hand, Julie Chrisley’s lawyers advocated for probation with special conditions and no prison time. In addition to the aforementioned charges, Julie Chrisley was also convicted of wire fraud and obstruction of justice.

Julie Chrisley’s defense team claimed that she played a minor role in the conspiracy and was not involved in obtaining the loans mentioned in the sentencing documents. They pointed out that she has no prior convictions, is an asset to her community, and has significant family obligations, including caring for her ailing mother-in-law. Todd Chrisley’s lawyers also argued that his imprisonment would negatively affect those who depend on him, including his mother and the employees of his television shows. The Chrisleys have three children together and also have full custody of Todd Chrisley’s son’s 10-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.
