June 20 (UPI) — Dalvin Cook, a seasoned running back, expressed his desire to play for a contender while also showing openness to the idea of partnering with DeAndre Hopkins, a fellow free agent. Cook made these remarks during an appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast. The Minnesota Vikings officially released him on June 9.

The Arizona Cardinals released Hopkins on May 30.

“If we end up on the same roster, that would be something epic for the NFL,” Cook said regarding the potential union with the accomplished wide receiver.

Cook, who spent six years with the Vikings and was named to the Pro Bowl four times, had an impressive performance last season with 1,468 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in 17 starts. Throughout his career, he accumulated 5,993 rushing yards, 1,794 receiving yards, and 52 touchdowns in 73 appearances. In 2020, Cook signed a lucrative 5-year, $63 million contract extension with the Vikings.

Both Cook and Hopkins share a common mindset of wanting to win rather than prioritizing money, making their potential union even more appealing. Cook mentioned that he intends to reach out to Hopkins to discuss their free agency plans, expressing his excitement at the possibility of being on the same roster as the veteran wide receiver.

Cook is expected to receive interest from multiple teams during this off-season. The Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Denver Broncos, and Dallas Cowboys are among the organizations that have been linked to him. Cook expressed his eagerness for the next chapter of his career and emphasized the importance of finding the right situation where he feels valued, involved, and has a chance to win.

Hopkins, who amassed 717 receiving yards and three touchdowns in nine games last season, has also generated interest from teams like the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Los Angeles Chargers. The New England Patriots and Houston Texans have been mentioned as potential suitors as well.

When considering cap space, the Chicago Bears currently lead the NFL with over $32 million available, according to OverTheCap.com. Other teams with significant cap space include the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and New York Jets.

Teams have until July 17 to sign franchise-tagged players to multi-year contract extensions. Other notable free agent running backs include Ezekiel Elliott, Leonard Fournette, and Kareem Hunt, while wide receivers such as Kenny Golladay, Julio Jones, Jarvis Landry, and Sammy Watkins are also available.

NFL training camps are set to commence in late July.
