Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced on Saturday.

The three-time Pro Bowler is expected to miss at least four games after sustaining a cracked fibula and ankle ligament damage during the Ravens’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11. Initial assessments indicated the possibility of a longer absence.

Andrews, 28, was injured in the first quarter of the game after being tackled by Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson. The tackle, similar to the one that caused Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain last postseason, has sparked discussions about its safety and potential prohibition in the NFL.

Following the game, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh described the injury as serious and potentially season-ending.

However, his outlook changed as he addressed reporters prior to Andrews’ appointment with foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte. Harbaugh revealed that while the injury was initially feared to be severe, an updated MRI provided some optimism about Andrews’ recovery.

On Tuesday, Andrews underwent successful surgery. Harbaugh, once again, expressed optimism while refraining from specifying a timeline for Andrews’ return.

Although Andrews is expected to miss the rest of the regular season, he may have a chance to return if the Ravens progress in the postseason. The Ravens, currently 8-3, are leading the AFC North and have six games remaining, including an upcoming visit to the Los Angeles Chargers.
