Oct. 17 (UPI) — A formerly long-lost X-wing fighter model used on screen in the original 1977 Star Wars film was auctioned for a Force-disturbing sum of over $3.13 million.

Bidding on the 1:24 scale model opened at $400,000 and closed Sunday with a bid of more than $3.13 million.

The X-wing model, commonly referred to as “the missing X-wing,” was discovered in the collection of Greg Jein, a renowned miniature maker who recently passed away. Jein’s expertise in creating cinematic miniatures earned him accolades and nominations, including for his work on projects like Star Trek and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

This particular X-wing model was one of four “hero” models crafted to capture intricate close-up shots during the iconic third act battle in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It boasts distinct red stripes on its top two wings, signifying its association with the Rebel Alliance squadron’s esteemed “Red Leader.”

In addition to representing Red Leader’s ship, the model also stood in for Red Five, piloted by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and Red Two, piloted by Wedge Antilles (Denis Lawson).

Described by Heritage Auctions as an unparalleled artifact from the world of Star Wars, the X-wing model holds immense value for fans and collectors alike. For decades, it was considered lost until visual effects experts assisting Jein’s family in managing his extensive collection of cinematic artifacts identified it.
