Randall Park Slams Hollywood’s Ignorance Regarding Barbie

Hollywood seems to grasp the success of “Barbie” while Ken comprehends the patriarchy.

Thanks to the box office hit directed by Greta Gerwig, there is a significant influx of movies about toys set to release in the next few years, as reported by Variety. However, Randall Park believes this response is as clueless as naming a doll “Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken.”

“I feel like, in general, this industry is learning the wrong lessons,” expressed Randall Park, the “Fresh Off the Boat” alum, in an interview published by Rolling Stone. “For instance, ‘Barbie’ is a tremendous blockbuster, and the idea is to make more movies about toys! No. We should be making more movies by and about women!”

Eliana Dockterman, a writer for Time magazine, also emphasized the appeal of “Barbie” in an article before its premiere. Dockterman argued that the potential success of “Barbie” at the box office has less to do with the merchandise but more with its subject matter and intended audience. It is rare for movies to cater to women without condescension.

Dockterman also compared “Barbie” to other films like “Legally Blonde” and “Clueless,” which were written by and adored by women.

Dockterman wrote, “The movie’s central premise follows a similar trajectory to those cult classics. An underestimated blonde with a passion for fashion explores the world and discovers something deeper about herself. However, it has been a while since we’ve seen a major studio film willing to embrace this type of story.”

Unfortunately, it appears that we are going to witness a flood of movies disguised as toy commercials. According to a report by Variety, Mattel has 14 properties in active development, including films based on “Barney,” “Masters of the Universe,” “Thomas and Friends,” and “American Girl.”

This lineup also includes a Hot Wheels movie helmed by J.J. Abrams, Vin Diesel starring in a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots film, and Lena Dunham writing and directing a Polly Pocket movie starring Lily Collins.

However, the most bizarre movie in the pipeline is a Magic 8 Ball film from Mattel, and our answer to that idea is a resounding no.
