‘Racially Motivated’ Shooting in Florida Claims Lives of 3

In a tragic incident that occurred at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, a white man went on a shooting spree, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The local sheriff, T.K. Waters, has confirmed that this attack was racially motivated. The shooter, who was in his 20s, harbored a hatred toward black people, according to Waters. However, there is no evidence suggesting that the shooter was connected to any larger extremist group. The weapons used in the shooting were a Glock handgun and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, with one of the firearms adorned with a swastika symbol. The shooter left behind writings that indicated his motive for the attack was the anniversary of another shooting that took place during a video game tournament in Jacksonville five years ago, resulting in two deaths. The shooter then took his own life.

The incident occurred just before 2pm at a Dollar General store near Edward Waters University, a historically Black university. The shooter had driven from neighboring Clay County to carry out the attack. Prior to the shooting, he had sent a text message to his father instructing him to check his computer. The father discovered disturbing writings, prompting the family to contact 911. However, it was already too late. Edward Waters University implemented safety measures by keeping students in their dorms, ensuring their protection. The university has clarified that neither students nor faculty were involved in the incident.

The shooting incident took place shortly after the conclusion of a commemorative March on Washington, where the issue of hate-motivated violence against people of color was highlighted by organizers. This attack on a shopping center in a predominantly Black neighborhood evokes concerns and fears reminiscent of past shootings targeting Black Americans. Examples include the 2022 one at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and the 2015 tragedy at a historic African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston, South Carolina.
