June 15 (UPI) — A raccoon found itself in a perilous situation when it became stranded on top of a light pole on a busy highway in Rhode Island. After multiple agencies came to the rescue, the raccoon was successfully saved.
Rhode Island State Police were alerted to the raccoon’s predicament on Tuesday morning. The animal was discovered perched atop a light pole on Route 146, near the Mineral Spring Avenue exit in Providence.
Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Protection were the first to respond to the scene. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, they reached out for assistance from the state Department of Transportation.
“Our main concern was the raccoon falling onto a passing vehicle and potentially causing a dangerous accident on this bustling roadway,” explained Mike Healey, spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, in an interview with WJAR-TV.
An environmental police officer joined forces with a RIDOT worker and together, they devised a plan. The officer trained the worker on how to use a snare device, and the worker then utilized a bucket truck to approach the raccoon and execute the rescue mission.
Shortly after 6:45 p.m., the raccoon was safely brought down from its precarious perch. The animal was observed heading towards a nearby wooded area, indicating that it was in good health.
“It sprinted off quickly, so it seemed to be in good shape,” added Healey.
