Quebec Premier Highlights the Urgency of a New Roof for Montreal’s Olympic Stadium

Montreal’s Olympic Stadium Could Receive a New Roof, Says Quebec Premier

In an effort to restore the reputation of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, Quebec Premier François Legault has expressed his desire for the installation of a new roof. Speaking at the provincial legislature, Legault stated, “We’re already working on proposals to replace it and I want the Olympic Stadium to once again become a positive symbol.” The iconic sports complex, which hosted the 1976 Olympics, has faced numerous challenges over the years due to its deteriorating roof.

Legault’s recent comments highlight an ongoing endeavor to address the issue. The previous Liberal government had announced plans to replace the roof by 2022, with an estimated cost of up to $250 million. However, in 2019, the project was delayed until at least 2024, and a new date has yet to be set. Making matters more complex, the agency responsible for the stadium recently reported that the technical ring supporting the roof also needs to be replaced. This ring, measuring almost 500 meters in circumference, poses additional challenges for the renovation project.

Despite the anticipated high costs associated with a new roof, Legault emphasized the importance of having a roof for the Olympic Stadium. He acknowledges the stadium’s significance, as many visitors, including French tourists, express a desire to visit the iconic site during their trip to Montreal. The premier is determined to find the most suitable scenario and ensure that the Olympic Stadium regains its positive image.

It remains to be seen when the roof replacement project will commence and when the stadium will once again be fully operational. However, the premier’s commitment to revitalizing this historic landmark provides hope for a successful and timely renovation.
