The journey of Yndan PH began when Gia Remulla and her mother-in-law, Jip Remulla, visited a cooperative of sewers in Indang, Cavite during the lockdown. This group of women and one man had come together to form a cooperative to sustain their livelihood. Initially, Gia and Jip thought of donating sewing machines to the cooperative, which they did. However, they also wanted to bring the products to the market, which sparked the idea for Yndan PH. They also discovered a community of skilled weavers in the area, who have been practicing their craft since before the war. Gia has made it her mission to preserve their unique designs and ensure their continuity for future generations.
Currently, Yndan PH has four to five active weavers, but Gia aims to expand their numbers by engaging the youth in the area. She plans to host competitions and workshops to encourage young individuals to take up weaving as a livelihood. In this way, the current weavers can become mentors to the new generation, ensuring the survival of the centuries-old weaving tradition.
To enhance their skills, Yndan PH invited renowned fashion designer Jojie Lloren to conduct a workshop for their sewers. Through Lloren’s guidance, the sewers learned techniques to refine their craftsmanship and pay attention to intricate details. Three sewers even had the opportunity to further their studies under Lloren’s mentorship, solidifying their roles as the main sewers of Yndan PH.
Yndan PH strives to go international, with plans to expand their brand to Singapore or Hong Kong. The clothing line not only features the exquisite weaves from the Indang community, but also introduces a luxury line in collaboration with Jojie Lloren. Yndan PH uses locally-made fabrics, making each piece unique and limited in quantity. They have also incorporated silk from India, particularly in their robes, which are designed to cater to breastfeeding mothers.
The distinctive feature of Yndan PH’s designs is the presence of the Indang weaves as accents on sleeves or belts. This sets them apart from other clothing labels. While their pieces may be higher priced compared to those found in malls, it is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and time invested by the artisans. Each piece is lovingly crafted by hand, ensuring its individuality.
