Putin Gives First Speech Since Wagner Rebellion, Expresses Gratitude to Russians for Safeguarding “Destiny of the Fatherland”

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his gratitude on Monday to the Russian government and citizens for their support in facing an armed rebellion that posed a significant challenge to his hold on power. This rebellion, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary group, was quickly neutralized, avoiding extensive bloodshed. Putin emphasized that those involved in the rebellion would have known that it would be suppressed, and he condemned their actions as a betrayal of their homeland. He stated that the enemies of Russia were hoping for a divided society and a bloody civil strife but their plans were foiled.

In his address, Putin acknowledged the efforts of the military personnel, law enforcement officers, and special services who stood against the rebels. He also thanked Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for assisting in the peaceful resolution of the mutiny. After his speech, Putin met with his law enforcement and security agency heads to discuss the situation further.

According to reports, the deal brokered with the Kremlin would have allowed Prigozhin to leave for Belarus, with Wagner troops receiving pardons and criminal charges against him being dropped. However, it was discovered that Prigozhin was still in Russia on Monday, while his troops had returned to their bases in Ukraine.
