Push Notifications Have Become Overwhelmingly Excessive.

A few years ago, I received a text from a friend that contained a screenshot of a sports-betting push notification from DraftKings, laden with emoji and promoting the day’s deals. As someone living in a state where sports betting was not yet legal, I felt a sense of unease. This encounter highlighted to me the potential compulsive behavior that could result from intrusive reminders to place bets. Unfortunately, this problem extends far beyond betting apps. The average smartphone user receives around 80 push notifications a day, ranging from advertisements and sale reminders to social media messages and news alerts. Push notifications have become an integral part of the smartphone experience, and businesses are allowed to use them as they see fit.

In terms of regulations, push notifications fall into a regulatory grey area. While express written consent is required for promotional text messages, there are few laws governing push notifications. Companies such as Apple and Google, who oversee the phone operating systems of the vast majority of Americans, decide how push notifications function in our lives. Opting out may not be the answer, as some notifications can be genuinely helpful. Moreover, trying to tailor push notifications to our needs can be a frustrating and tedious endeavor.

Regulators or Apple and Google could help solve the problem of spammy push notifications. Instead of a blanket opt-in, users should be taken directly to a menu that allows them to select which notifications they want to receive. This would reduce the number of intrusive messages that users receive each day. In many ways, push notifications highlight the frustrations that come with owning a smartphone. While they are a defining feature of modern digital life, their overuse can be overwhelming and disconcerting.
