Nacua, the rookie sensation, has been rewriting the record books in his first two weeks of the season.
In Sunday’s game, he set a new rookie record with 15 catches. In fact, his 25 total catches over the first two games are the most by any rookie in NFL history, surpassing Odell Beckham Jr.’s record of 23 in a two-game span back in 2014.
Not only that, but Nacua is also the first rookie in the Super Bowl era to have double-digit receptions and over 100 receiving yards in each of his team’s first two games. This puts him in an elite group that includes Cooper Kupp (2022), Miles Austin (2010), Isaac Bruce (1998), and Andre Rison (1994).
Despite his extraordinary performance, the rookie is disappointed that his records came in a close defeat rather than a victory.
“I’m not really paying much attention to the records,” Nacua humbly stated. “For me, success will only come when the team wins. I’m looking forward to us bouncing back and making the most of our opportunities to secure a win. Last week was nice, but I know there’s room for improvement. The most important thing is getting that W.”
It’s no surprise that Stafford is confident in Nacua’s ability to make plays. Throughout his career, the veteran QB has shown a willingness to target receivers he trusts, like Calvin Johnson and Kupp. The unexpected part is how quickly Stafford has formed a connection with the fifth-round rookie. As long as Nacua continues to deliver, Stafford will continue to feed him the ball.
The big question is how the targets will be distributed once Kupp returns from injury. It’s likely that Nacua’s share will decrease, but he has already proven that he can be a valuable asset in McVay’s offense.
