Aug. 14 (UPI) — Al-Hilal, the Saudi soccer club, has agreed to pay Paris Saint-Germain $98 million in transfer fees to bring in Neymar Jr., their star striker.

According to sources from ESPN, CBS, and Sky Sports, Neymar will undergo a physical examination before officially joining Al-Hilal on a two-year contract.

Neymar, 31, moved to PSG from Barcelona in 2017 and has since made 173 appearances for the French club, winning five Ligue 1 titles. However, his time at PSG was marked by frequent battles with injuries. He scored 118 goals and provided 77 assists during his stay.

Before his stint at PSG, Neymar played for the Brazilian club Santos and had a successful career there as well, scoring a total of 105 goals and providing 76 assists in 186 appearances.

Internationally, Neymar has represented Brazil and scored 77 goals in 124 appearances. He played a vital role in Brazil’s victory at the 2016 Summer Games and their second-place finish in the 2021 World Cup.

It’s worth noting that Al-Hilal previously attempted to sign Kylian Mbappe, Neymar’s teammate at PSG, with a bid of $332 million. The club also pursued Lionel Messi, who eventually joined Inter Miami.

Al-Hilal finished third in the 2022-23 Saudi Pro League standings, behind Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr.

This transfer is part of a larger strategy by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which owns Al-Hilal and other Roshn Saudi League clubs. The fund has been attracting several high-profile players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, and N’Golo Kante.

Al-Hilal’s season opener in the Roshn Saudi League will be against Abha in Abha, Saudi Arabia.
