Proud Boy Under House Arrest Vanishes Prior to Sentencing for Capitol Riot

Authorities are currently conducting a search for a member of the Proud Boys extremist group who went missing just days before his sentencing in a U.S. Capitol riot case. This information was revealed through a warrant that was publicly released on Friday. Christopher Worrell, hailing from Naples, Florida, was set to be sentenced on Friday after being found guilty of using pepper spray gel on police officers during the mob attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of 14 years for him.

However, the sentencing was unexpectedly canceled and a sealed arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday, according to court records. The U.S. attorney’s office for Washington D.C. has urged the public to come forward with any information regarding Worrell’s whereabouts.

Recently, Worrell had been under house arrest in Florida following his release from jail in Washington in November 2021. This release came after a judge confirmed his civil-rights complaints regarding mistreatment in jail. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth held D.C. jail officials in contempt of court for the delay in providing medical care for Worrell’s broken hand.

Worrell’s attorney, William Shipley, has chosen not to comment on the situation. Both Worrell’s phone number and the contact information for his custodian during his house arrest are currently non-functional.

It is worth noting that federal authorities have identified more than 3 dozen individuals involved in the Capitol siege as members, leaders, or associates of the Proud Boys, a group that labels itself as a politically incorrect men’s club for “Western chauvinists.” Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and three other members of the extremist group were convicted of seditious conspiracy in May.

As for the broader context, a total of approximately 1,000 individuals have been charged with federal crimes related to the January 6 riot. Out of these, over 600 have either pleaded guilty or been convicted, with around 450 individuals being sentenced to imprisonment ranging from seven days to ten years.
