Proud Boy Sentenced to Prison for Breaking Capitol Window on Jan. 6

A federal judge delivered a powerful statement to Dominic Pezzola, a member of the Proud Boys, as he sentenced him to 10 years in prison for his role in the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. The judge expressed shock and disbelief that such an event could occur in our country. Pezzola’s actions, captured in images of him using a stolen police riot shield to break a Capitol window, came to symbolize the threat to democracy posed by the attack. These images were also used in the prosecution of Donald Trump during his impeachment trial.

Pezzola was tried alongside four other leaders of the Proud Boys, and while he was acquitted of seditious conspiracy, he was convicted of civil disorder, destruction of government property, assaulting a police officer, and theft of the riot shield. Two of his codefendants received longer sentences, with prosecutors seeking 20 years for Pezzola. During the attack, Pezzola even recorded a video of himself smoking a cigar and arrogantly stating his belief that they could successfully take over the Capitol. However, during his trial, he stuck to conspiracy theories and denied the charges against him. It was only on Friday, during his sentencing, that he finally expressed remorse and apologized for his actions, admitting that he never should have breached the Capitol barrier.

Pezzola’s family pleaded for mercy on his behalf, with his wife sharing that he had been watching Fox News and drinking heavily in the days leading up to January 6. She mentioned that she had already canceled their cable news subscription. Despite her plea for leniency, she also referred to Pezzola as “a f—ing idiot,” a sentiment she had also expressed during his trial. His daughters have faced bullying and suffered as a result of his actions. After the judge left the courtroom, Pezzola defiantly raised his fist and shouted, “Trump won!”

It is clear that Pezzola’s actions had significant consequences not only for himself but also for his family and the nation as a whole. The judge’s harsh sentencing serves as a reminder of the gravity of the Capitol attack and the urgent need to safeguard our democracy.
