Protesters Disrupt BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall Demanding an End to Oil Usage

Two protesters from the group Just Stop Oil caused a disruption during the opening night of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. The pair ran onto the stage, unfurled orange banners, set off confetti cannons, and sounded air horns. They were quickly removed from the stage, as shown in social media footage. Just Stop Oil took to Twitter to explain their actions, stating that the protesters demanded the immediate halting of all new oil and gas consents and licenses from the UK government. The protesters attempted to address the audience before being forcibly taken away.

In a related incident, three activists from Just Stop Oil interrupted the live broadcast of the Channel 4 programme The Last Leg. They sprayed orange confetti on the set and handed the hosts Just Stop Oil vests before being escorted off by security. This follows a similar disruption during the Glyndebourne opera festival last month, where glitter cannons and air horns were used to interrupt a performance. Protests have also occurred during Wimbledon, London Pride, and an Ashes cricket match.

One of the stage invaders from the BBC Proms was Kate Logan, a London resident. She expressed her surprise at finding herself disrupting a performance at the Albert Hall, recalling her past singing with a youth choir at the venue. She emphasized the need to draw attention to the planetary crisis and hold leaders accountable for their inaction. Pia Bastide, a community worker also from London, participated in the demonstration and highlighted the urgency of the climate crisis, particularly in light of extreme temperatures affecting Europe. She refused to accept a future compromised by the continuous issuance of new oil licenses.

It is evident that Just Stop Oil is committed to using disruptive tactics to raise awareness about their cause. Their actions aim to challenge the status quo and inspire ordinary people to demand the necessary changes in policy and actions regarding oil and gas.
