No Immigrant Hatred

After reading the article titled “Hate at Migrant Site in SI” (Aug. 28), I feel compelled to address the misconceptions surrounding the residents who oppose the handling of illegal migrants. Personally, I am not acquainted with anyone who is not an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants. Every individual I know has either come to this country themselves or their ancestors did. The crucial distinction to make is that these immigrants came to the country legally and did not become a burden on the citizens here. However, the current influx of illegal immigrants, taking advantage of open-border policies, has raised concerns. It’s important to recognize that opposing this situation does not make one anti-immigrant.

A Change in Drink Recommendations

Dr. George Koob’s comments advocating for a drastic change to the federal recommendations on alcohol consumption before the completion of the alcohol research review undermines the scientific rigor and objectivity of the entire dietary guidelines process (“Biden’s alcohol czar warns new guidance could be only 2 beers a week,” Aug. 24). For over 30 years, the federal guidance on alcohol consumption has been limited to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men for those who choose to drink. It is concerning and inappropriate for a federal official to predetermine the outcome of the dietary guidelines and propose changing decades of established guidelines without the support of scientific review.

Anthony’s Take on the Song

I must applaud Oliver Anthony for finding humor in the use of his song at the Republican primary debate (“‘Rich Men’ singer: I’m no Joe fan,” Aug. 27). His observation that it applies to both parties is accurate. Both parties desire complete control and impose burdensome taxes on the middle class. While I lean more towards the Republicans, I recognize that neither party truly prioritizes my best interests. They are detached from the reality of ordinary citizens and are governed by wealthy figureheads.

Chaos in Los Angeles

Similar to New York City and other urban areas, law-abiding citizens in Los Angeles are finding themselves outnumbered by misguided “progressives” who consistently vote for lawmakers and prosecutors that bring turmoil to their way of life (“Ballot Bandits,” Susan Shelley, PostScript, Aug. 27). What is even more concerning is their inability to comprehend the aftermath of their choices. It is disheartening to witness such absence of reason and logic. Why would anyone vote for the inevitable decline in safety and quality of life?

Transgender Inclusion in Sororities

As someone who was part of a sorority, I am perplexed by how an apparently unwelcome transgender person gained entry into the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at the University of Wyoming (“Sorority stymied,” Aug. 30). The process of recruitment remains relatively unchanged: rush parties are held to meet potential new members, and current sorority members vote on extending an invitation to them. Prospective members can only join if there is mutual interest. I am curious about the circumstances surrounding this case.
