Prosecutors have officially announced their intention to seek the death penalty against Bryan Kohberger, who stands accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students in November. The victims, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, were tragically killed in their rental house near the campus. The prosecutor has listed aggravating circumstances, including the particularly heinous and depraved nature of the crime, as well as the defendant’s utter disregard for human life, all of which could qualify Kohberger for capital punishment under state law. The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, as reported by AP.

During his court appearance on Monday, Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students, opted to remain silent and refrained from entering a plea. According to Fox News, Kohberger’s attorney informed the judge, “Your honor, we are standing silent,” indicating that the defendant did not want to take a stance on guilt or innocence. This action is equivalent to a not-guilty plea, resulting in the judge entering a plea of not guilty on Kohberger’s behalf. The trial is tentatively scheduled to commence on October 2, according to the AP.

Prosecutors now have a 60-day window to decide whether they will seek the death penalty, as reported by NBC News. During his court proceedings, Kohberger exchanged smiles with his attorney, Anne Taylor, a public defender from Kootenai County, and affirmed his understanding of the charges against him when asked by the judge. Kohberger was pursuing a doctorate in criminology at Washington State University, located nearby, at the time of the alleged stabbing incident that claimed the lives of the four Idaho students in November. (Prior to the murders, Kohberger allegedly deceived a female friend by fabricating a story about a burglar entering her residence.)
