Property Manager of Mar-a-Lago Files a Plea

The property manager of Mar-a-Lago, Carlos De Oliveira, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to four charges related to former President Trump’s classified documents case. De Oliveira is accused of working with Trump to withhold boxes of documents from the federal government, including attempting to delete security footage. The charges against De Oliveira include conspiracy to obstruct justice, destroying evidence, and lying to the FBI. Last week, Trump pleaded not guilty to over 40 charges in the case, while his personal aide, Walt Nauta, pleaded not guilty to eight charges. De Oliveira’s arraignment was delayed because his lawyer, Larry Donald Murrell Jr., had not filed the necessary paperwork to represent him, as reported by the Washington Post.

Murrell, along with John Irving of Washington, DC, will defend De Oliveira. In the hearing at the US Courthouse in Fort Pierce, Murrell entered the plea on his client’s behalf. De Oliveira, a Portuguese immigrant, started working at Mar-a-Lago as a maintenance worker before becoming a valet. He assumed the role of property manager in January 2022. The trial for the classified documents is tentatively scheduled to begin on May 20, presided over by Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee. Another pretrial hearing is set for August 24. Cannon advised Murrell to obtain a security clearance before the hearing so he can consult with De Oliveira regarding the classified documents. (Read more Mar-a-Lago indictment stories.)
