Multiple sources confirm Patrick Kane has chosen the Detroit Red Wings for the 2023-24 season, with hopes of leading them to the playoffs after signing a one-year deal.
Kane, a top-scoring American player since joining the league in 2007-08, ranks third overall among past players and was selected No. 1 overall in the 2007 NHL draft. He had 92 points two seasons ago.
Kane, 35, earned three Stanley Cup titles with the Chicago Blackhawks, was the playoff MVP in 2013, and won the Hart Trophy in the 2015-16 season.

However, Kane is returning from hip resurfacing surgery. Recent workout videos showed Kane going through intense routines, while Capitals star Nicklas Backstrom is taking a leave of absence to assess his future after undergoing the same surgery.
Despite a bothersome hip last season, Kane reached 20 goals for the 15th time. However, his 57 points were his lowest total, aside from the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season. He ended last season with the New York Rangers and scored six goals in 26 games between the regular season and the playoffs.
Patrick Kane’s Impact on the Red Wings
Kane will reunite with Alex DeBrincat, a former linemate from the Blackhawks, who had two 40-goal seasons in Chicago. DeBrincat began the season with 10 goals in seven games in Detroit before a slowdown. Kane wasn’t able to replicate his chemistry with Artemi Panarin in New York, partly due to his hip issues.
Kane’s signing signifies the Red Wings’ push to end their seven-season playoff drought. General manager Steve Yzerman has been aggressive in adding players like DeBrincat, David Perron, Shayne Gostisbehere, J.T. Compher, and now Kane. Kane had other offers but chose to join a contender, signaling faith in the Red Wings’ direction.
