Profitable Kentucky Truck Plant Takes a Hit as Auto Workers Strike Ford

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union recently announced the expansion of its nearly 4-week strike against the “Big Three” automakers to include Ford’s truck plant in Kentucky.

With approximately 8,700 union members employed at the Louisville facility, their production focuses on Ford’s Super Duty trucks, as well as the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.

This strike marks the first time that the union has specifically targeted the production of large pickups, which are major revenue sources for Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, the parent company of Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.

UAW President Shawn Fain stated, “We have been crystal clear, and we have waited long enough, but Ford has not gotten the message. It’s time for a fair contract at Ford and the rest of the Big Three. If they can’t understand that after four weeks, the 8,700 workers shutting down this extremely profitable plant will help them understand it.”

Responding to the strike, Ford denounced the decision to target the Kentucky plant as “grossly irresponsible but unsurprising.” The company claims to have made an “outstanding offer” to the union in an attempt to resolve the strike.

“In addition to affecting approximately 9,000 direct employees at the plant, this work stoppage will generate painful aftershocks ― including putting at risk approximately a dozen additional Ford operations and many more supplier operations,” Ford emphasized in a statement.
