Production at Japan plants at Toyota halted due to computer problem

Toyota’s auto plants in Japan encountered a temporary halt in their assembly lines due to a computer system issue on Tuesday.

This interruption affected a total of 28 assembly lines spanning across 14 Toyota auto plants located throughout Japan.

According to Toyota spokesperson Sawako Takeda, the company does not suspect a cyberattack to be the cause of this problem, which primarily affects the computer system responsible for managing incoming auto parts. Investigation into the root cause is ongoing.

Toyota has announced that production is set to resume on Wednesday. The specific models that may be impacted by this interruption have not been disclosed.

“We extend our sincere apologies for any inconveniences caused,” stated Toyota in a press release obtained by the AP.

This incident comes on the heels of a worldwide shortage of computer chips and other automotive components that disrupted production in various Asian countries due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Toyota, known for manufacturing popular vehicles like the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid, and the luxurious Lexus brand, has recently seen some relief in the chip shortage challenges.

It’s worth noting that the chip shortage issue was not limited to Asian nations alone. In March 2022, General Motors had to temporarily halt production at one of its pickup truck factories in Fort Wayne, Ind. due to the scarcity of computer chips.
