Producer says Mattel’s upcoming live-action “Barney” film will cater to adults’ “millennial angst”

A live-action “Barney” movie is in the works for the big screen, targeting adults who grew up with the beloved character, according to a studio executive. Producer Kevin McKeon explained in an interview with The New Yorker that the film, produced by Mattel and Daniel Kaluuya, known for his roles in “Get Out” and “Black Panther,” will have a surrealistic tone and focus on the trials and tribulations of thirty-somethings who grew up with Barney. The aim is to tap into the millennial angst and disenchantment with the world.

“Barney & Friends” debuted in 1992, making its original fans now in their 30s. The character is known for his optimism, educational messages, and the iconic “I Love You” song. The specific plot of the live-action film has not been revealed, but McKeon hinted that it will have a similar tone to artful independent films such as “The Whale” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner also mentioned the movie’s unconventional approach to the character in a 2019 announcement. Working with Daniel Kaluuya will bring a fresh perspective to Barney and surprise audiences while remaining nostalgic for adults and entertaining for kids. The project aims to resonate with both generations.

Earlier this year, Mattel released a sneak peek of a new digital Barney as part of the franchise’s relaunch. The animated Barney is set to debut in 2024 and will feature the dinosaur and his friends going on adventures centered on love, community, and encouragement.
