Probation Officer Accused of Assaulting Teen in Custody in Malibu

A supervising deputy probation officer in Malibu, Oscar Cross, has been charged with a felony count of assault against a minor at a juvenile camp, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón. If convicted, Cross could face up to three years in county jail. The alleged incident occurred on October 23, 2020, at the Camp Kilpatrick facility, where Cross and four other probation officers were trying to restrain a juvenile. The District Attorney’s Office stated that Cross used excessive force during the incident.

It is important to note that Cross had recently completed a four-hour course on child abuse prevention and reporting. District Attorney Gascón called the assault a “brutal assault on a child” and emphasized the significance of a video obtained by the Los Angeles Times, which depicted the youth screaming and in pain. The video played a crucial role in the decision to charge Cross.

Regarding the possibility of charges against other probation officers, Gascón mentioned that there are ongoing investigations that have not yet concluded. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath expressed her shock and distress over the use of excessive force captured in the video, criticizing the previous chief probation officer for not taking appropriate action. Former Probation Department Chief Adolfo Gonzales reportedly did not follow recommendations to fire Cross or share the video with the District Attorney’s Office.

The criminal filing against Cross is expected to send a message to the probation department that such actions will not be tolerated, as stated by Los Angeles County Probation Oversight Commissioner Franky Carrillo.
