Pro Surfer Mikala Jones: Remembering the “Legend” as Family and Friends Grieve

Tragic news broke on Sunday as professional surfer Mikala Jones passed away in a surfing accident in Indonesia, according to his father. His daughter, Isabella “Bella” Jones, paid a heartfelt tribute to her father on Instagram, expressing her love and wishing for one last hug.

The touching tribute included a carousel of images showcasing the bond between Isabella and her father throughout the years, whether they were on a surfboard or simply enjoying the water together. Isabella thanked her father for all the valuable life lessons and for always being there for her.

In a separate Instagram post, Isabella vowed to carry on her father’s legacy and expressed gratitude for all the moments they shared together in surf spots. Their bond was evident in the stunning images and videos he captured throughout his career.

Mikala Jones, at the age of 44, tragically lost his life on Sunday morning while surfing in the Mentawai Islands off the western coast of Sumatra. His surfboard fin accidentally cut his femoral artery, a large blood vessel in the thigh that supplies blood to the lower limbs, according to his father, Dr. John Jones, a dentist. Born in Kailua, Hawaii, Mikala started surfing at a young age and achieved success as an amateur, winning two national championships.

As his talents grew, Mikala secured sponsorships and embarked on trips to famous surf spots around the world, including Tahiti, Fiji, South Africa, and the Galapagos Islands. In the 1990s, he began experimenting with self-photography while riding waves. He ingeniously attached a camera to his board and captured incredible shots by holding the camera under his chin. Eventually, he collaborated with GoPro, which became his sponsor.

“He was not only a skilled surfer but also a humble artist. His photographs were truly extraordinary,” remarked Dr. John Jones in an interview.

Mikala’s Instagram page regularly featured breathtaking selfies of him amidst curling waves, captivating fellow surfers and fans alike. After his passing, fellow surfers, including world champion Kelly Slater and renowned surf photographer Zak Noyle, left heartfelt comments on his last photo. The surfing community mourned the loss of a true legend.

Artist Robbie Crawford shared a clip of Mikala on his own Instagram, and Isabella responded with heartfelt emojis. Robbie expressed his admiration for Mikala’s artistic abilities and hailed him as the greatest surf artist.

Mikala is survived by his wife, Emma Brereton, and his daughters, Bella and Violet, who split their time between Indonesia and Hawaii. In addition to his father, he is survived by an older sister and two younger brothers. His mother, Violet Jones-Medusky, passed away in 2011.
