Mikala Jones, at the age of 44, tragically lost his life on Sunday morning while surfing in the Mentawai Islands off the western coast of Sumatra. His surfboard fin accidentally cut his femoral artery, a large blood vessel in the thigh that supplies blood to the lower limbs, according to his father, Dr. John Jones, a dentist. Born in Kailua, Hawaii, Mikala started surfing at a young age and achieved success as an amateur, winning two national championships.
As his talents grew, Mikala secured sponsorships and embarked on trips to famous surf spots around the world, including Tahiti, Fiji, South Africa, and the Galapagos Islands. In the 1990s, he began experimenting with self-photography while riding waves. He ingeniously attached a camera to his board and captured incredible shots by holding the camera under his chin.
