Prison Transfer Prompts Swift Attack on Kristin Smart’s Killer

According to a report by Fox News, the man who was found guilty of killing college student Kristin Smart in California was assaulted in prison and is now in serious condition in a hospital. Paul Flores, who was convicted of premeditated murder in the 1996 disappearance of Smart, was sentenced to 25 years to life in March. The judge, as reported by NPR, referred to Flores as “a cancer to society.” Flores had recently been transferred to Pleasant Valley State Prison and was attacked just five days after the move, according to his lawyer Harold Mesick as quoted in USA Today. Mesick expressed his hope for Flores’ recovery.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation stated that Flores, 46, was taken to a medical facility in serious condition and is currently under investigation for his injuries. However, the department has since provided an update, stating that Flores’ condition has been upgraded to fair. According to USA Today, if his condition continues to improve, he may be returned to prison under protective custody. Flores is currently appealing his conviction.

Prosecutors alleged that Flores was the last person seen with Smart, who was intoxicated after a party, and was observed with a black eye in the days following her disappearance. They claimed that Flores killed Smart in his dorm room during a rape or attempted rape, buried her body under a deck at his family’s home, and later moved it. Multiple women accused Flores of drugging and sexually assaulting them. Prosecutors also discovered a video in which Flores is seen raping an intoxicated woman. Despite these developments, Smart’s body has never been found. (Read more Paul Flores stories.)
