Princess Michael of Kent Earns Her Title as Princess Pushy at Charity World Chelsea Bun Competition, Refusing to Eat Due to Lack of Prior Information

Princess Michael of Kent gracefully declined an offer to eat a Chelsea bun while serving as a judge at the prestigious World Chelsea Bun Awards. The 78-year-old royal, married to Prince Michael of Kent and a first cousin of the late Queen, stepped in to assist at the awards held in Partridges, a high-end shop in Piccadilly that supplies groceries to the Royal Family. Lady Sophie Windsor, Princess Michael’s daughter-in-law and original judge for the event, had a scheduling conflict and asked her mother-in-law to take her place.

However, there seemed to be a miscommunication, as Princess Michael was unaware that she would have to taste the buns during the baking competition. “I wasn’t told by my daughter-in-law that I was going to do a taste. Because I’m not going to taste,” she revealed on Channel 5’s The Royal Borough: Kensington & Chelsea. The image-conscious princess has maintained her trim figure well into her eighth decade and has previously shared her preference for avoiding foods with cream or salt.

Describing her dietary choices to The Guardian in 2007, Princess Michael explained her inclination towards English food due to being “very health conscious” and mentioned that French cuisine often contains excessive cream. However, she also believed that British cuisine has excessive salt and pepper. Despite this, she appreciates British cuisine for its simplicity and flavor, particularly its use of English herbs like rosemary. She shared that when she skips lunch, she opts for jelly as it is filling but not fattening. As for a typical lunch, she enjoys a flavorful salad with a dressing made from tahini and goat’s yogurt.

During the judging process for the Chelsea buns, Princess Michael relied solely on her eyesight to assess the entries, while observing the other judges indulging in plenty of tastings. She remarked on the attractiveness of the pomegranate buns and found the savory buns to be quite interesting. One bun in particular caught her attention due to its large size, almost resembling a meal. However, she acknowledged that it was a challenging task to judge the buns based on appearance alone.

Partridges, a family-run grocer based in St James’, has earned recognition as a favorite of the Queen. In 1994, after receiving an order request from Buckingham Palace, Partridges was granted the prestigious Royal Warrant as Grocers to Her Majesty. The company launched the World Chelsea Bun Awards in 2019, with each subsequent year featuring a new judging panel. This year, Princess Michael of Kent and cake expert Jane Asher were the esteemed judges.
