July 15 (UPI) — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol made an unplanned visit to Kyiv on Saturday, pledging comprehensive support to the war-torn nation during a meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky stated that they are “addressing all matters essential for the wellbeing and safety of the people and for upholding the rules-based international order.”

“Through meetings and the establishment of mutual understanding, we have nurtured an emotional connection that enables us to quickly comprehend each other during negotiations. I am particularly pleased that you, Mr. President, and the First Lady, are in Ukraine,” Zelensky told the media after meeting with the South Korean president.

Upon his arrival in Kyiv, President Yoon also visited Bucha and Irpin, where Russian forces carried out atrocities against civilians in early 2022.

Zelensky expressed gratitude to President Yoon for supplying de-mining vehicles to Ukraine and raised concerns about Ukrainian children who have been unlawfully deported by Russian occupying forces.

“We must provide all Ukrainian children with the opportunity to live in safety, free from war, torture, and violence. I am grateful to you, Mr. President, and the First Lady, as well as your people, for supporting our efforts to bring peace and security to our nation and to bring back the Ukrainian children abducted by Russia,” Zelensky stated.

Zelensky also highlighted South Korea’s endorsement of an international mechanism to prosecute war crimes committed by Russian occupying forces.

“Supporting the endeavors of the International Criminal Court and recognizing the necessity for specialized international processes to hold Russia accountable for its aggression is of utmost importance,” he said.

President Yoon, on the other hand, drew parallels between the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the invasion of South Korea by North Korea in 1950, expressing support for the Ukrainian peace formula proposed by Zelensky.

“The Republic of Korea will become a steadfast partner of Ukraine in supporting freedom, peace, and development. Moving forward, we will be highly reliable partners in supporting peace and freedom worldwide,” Yoon affirmed.
