Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced on Saturday his plan to invite Pope Francis to attend the annual Catholic festival of the Cirio de Nazare in the city of Belem, Brazil, which takes place in October. Lula will have an audience with Pope Francis during his upcoming trip to Europe next week.
Lula expressed his desire for Pope Francis to join the celebration during an event in the state of Para, stating, “I want to invite him to come to Brazil again. But I wanted to invite him to come to the Cirio celebration here. It would be extraordinary if he could participate.”
Pope Francis and Lula had a phone call on May 31, where they discussed various topics including the war in Ukraine and environmental protection in Brazil. During the call, Lula extended the invitation to Pope Francis, who expressed his consideration of the invitation.
The Cirio de Nazare festival, dedicated to Our Lady of Nazareth, is Brazil’s largest religious celebration. It has been observed since 1793 and attracts approximately two million people who participate in pilgrimages and processions.
