Law enforcement officials, firefighters, and healthcare workers in the Riverside area will participate in a simulation of an “active shooter” on Wednesday. The simulation aims to create an immediate system for transporting, triaging, and caring for individuals in need of treatment at Riverside Community Hospital.
The mass casualty drill will take place from noon to 3 p.m. in the emergency room of the hospital and surrounding buildings on the medical campus at 4445 Magnolia Ave.
Riverside police officers, city fire department crews, and Cal Fire personnel will be present during the drill, according to hospital spokesman David Maxfield.
“The main objectives for the drill are to enhance interagency communications between RCH, police, the fire department, and American Medical Response, and to handle the potential surge in patients in the event of a shooting,” said Maxfield. “The hospital will activate a disaster command center and the emergency room will prepare for an influx of patients.”
The exercise is not expected to disrupt normal hospital operations.
Although some first responders may be called away for real emergencies, the simulation will continue.
Similar “active shooter” drills have been conducted in other areas of the city and Riverside County in previous years, including involvement from schools.
