Tracking Hurricane Lee

Hurricane Lee has strengthened from a tropical storm into a hurricane and is expected to become an extremely dangerous major hurricane by Friday, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center. Here’s everything you need to know about the storm, including its current status, projected path, and potential impact.

When did Lee become a hurricane?

The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Tropical Storm Lee had intensified into a Category 1 hurricane in an update shared at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. As of late Wednesday night, Lee had maximum sustained winds of about 80 miles per hour and was continuing to gain strength. The storm is forecasted to become a major hurricane by Friday, with a possibility of reaching Category 4 intensity.

Where is Hurricane Lee heading?

As of Wednesday night, Hurricane Lee is moving west-northwest at approximately 14 miles per hour. The storm’s projected path indicates that it will pass near the northern Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico over the weekend. The Leeward Islands, located at the meeting point of the Caribbean Sea and the western Atlantic Ocean, include the U.S. Virgin Islands. The hurricane center has issued warnings of large ocean swells that will affect the Lesser Antilles by Friday and subsequently impact the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Hispaniola by the weekend.

Although there are currently no coastal warnings or watches in effect for the Leeward Islands, the hurricane center advises interests in the area to closely monitor Lee’s progress. The Weather Channel states that the most probable scenario involves Lee brushing against the islands, bringing gusty winds and showers. However, a more southern track that could result in more significant impacts cannot be ruled out.

Is Hurricane Lee going to hit Florida?

According to CBS Miami, Hurricane Lee is not expected to impact the United States. The storm system is projected to turn northward and away from the U.S. coast. Nevertheless, weather experts will continue to monitor Lee’s progress closely in case of any changes. Florida is currently recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, which caused widespread flooding and significant damage across the state and neighboring regions. The financial toll of Hurricane Idalia could reach $20 billion.

Spaghetti models for Hurricane Lee.

Hurricane Lee spaghetti models

Spaghetti weather models, also known as spaghetti plots, show the different potential paths a storm may take as it develops. Although these models do not predict impact or timing, they provide valuable insights into potential risk areas. Spaghetti models for Hurricane Lee mainly indicate the storm staying over the ocean, with a few paths suggesting a close approach to the Leeward Islands. Recent models also suggest a potential impact on the U.S. Mid-Atlantic or New England coast next week.

The forecast models have been somewhat inconsistent, with some initially predicting a landfall in the Mid-Atlantic region followed by a turn out to sea. However, the current track is closer to the East Coast. The European model (ECMWF) suggests Lee will stay out to sea, avoiding a direct landfall but coming close to the U.S. mainland. On the other hand, the American model (GFS) predicts Lee scraping Cape Cod and heading into the Canadian Maritimes. Meteorologists anticipate gaining a clearer understanding of the storm’s likely path as it continues to develop.

Stay tuned for further updates on Hurricane Lee’s progress and potential impact.
