Prada Sets New Fashion Trend for Future Moon Explorers: Next Astronauts to Wear Prada

Prada Joins Forces with Axiom Space to Design Spacesuits for Moon Mission in 2025

The first crewed mission to the moon’s surface since 1972 is set to be a fashion statement as well. Prada, the renowned Italian fashion house, has teamed up with Axiom Space, the winner of the contract for the first full redesign of US spacesuits in decades, to create spacesuits for the Artemis III mission planned for 2025, according to a report by Designboom. This mission will also mark the first time a female astronaut sets foot on the moon. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s marketing director, expressed excitement about utilizing the company’s “decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology, and design know-how” that originated from their involvement in the America’s Cup in the 1990s.

Axiom Space CEO, Michael Suffredini, said in a statement that Prada’s technical expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will contribute to the comfort and human factors considerations of the astronauts on the lunar surface. Jeffrey Hoffman, a former astronaut and current professor, believes that Prada’s experience in composite fabrics can bring significant technical advancements to the outer layers of the new spacesuit, as he stated in an article on the BBC. However, he emphasizes that functionality and maintaining a good thermal environment take precedence over aesthetic patterns. According to Hoffman, a spacesuit is comparable to a miniature spacecraft, as it must provide pressure, oxygen, and regulate temperature. Hoffman has personally logged over 1,200 hours in space and performed four spacewalks during his five Space Shuttle missions.
