Powerful United Auto Workers Stage Strike Against Ford, GM, and Stellantis

Detroit’s Big Three automakers – Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis – failed to reach a new labor agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW) before their contract expired at midnight on Thursday. This has resulted in one of the largest strikes seen in the U.S. for years. UAW President, Shawn Fain, announced in a Facebook Live address that employees at three factories would immediately go on strike. The factories affected include a GM assembly plant in Missouri, a Ford assembly plant in Michigan, and a Stellantis assembly complex in Ohio. Roughly 12,700 employees will participate in the strike and will be paid approximately $500 per week from the UAW’s strike fund. While the strike begins with these three plants, further walkouts may occur if talks with the automakers do not progress. This strike marks the first time since 2019 that workers at the Detroit-based automakers have gone on strike. The UAW’s demands include a 36% pay increase, pension benefits for all employees, limited use of temporary workers, more paid time off, and greater job protections. Talks between the UAW and the automakers have been ongoing since July, with the automakers emphasizing the need to remain competitive in the electric vehicle market. The strike has the potential to disrupt the domestic auto industry, raise car prices, and impact the overall U.S. economy. President Joe Biden has dispatched top aides to Detroit to help resolve the strike and has expressed his support for the workers’ frustration regarding fair profit-sharing.
