Potential Tool Against Aging Identified by Researchers

New research in Science suggests that taurine, an amino acid found in seafood and dark meat, can boost longevity, at least in animals. However, the researchers emphasize that their findings do not necessarily apply to humans. Taurine is a naturally occurring amino acid produced abundantly in the human body, as well as being an ingredient in energy drinks. While taurine is beneficial for cell development and nutrition, the Mayo Clinic warns that the health risks of energy drinks, which can be crammed with caffeine and sugar, may outweigh any benefits. The study found that increasing the amount of taurine in preclinical models increased their length of healthy life, with mice seeing a lifespan increase of up to 12%, worms living longer and healthier, and rhesus monkeys experiencing better health. However, many complex factors are involved in the aging process, and outside observers warn against reducing the effects to a simple taurine-fights-aging shorthand. The next step is to launch a “multicentric, multinational intervention trial in humans,” says co-author Vijay Yadav of Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.
