A mass deportation operation, a new Muslim ban, tariffs on all imported goods and “freedom cities” built on federal land. With less than a year to go until Election Day, the 2024 presidential campaign has been dominated by numerous investigations into former President Donald Trump and the subsequent charges against him. Despite the legal obstacles he faces, Trump is leading the race for the Republican nomination and has presented a sweeping set of policy goals should he win a second term, marking a significant change from President Joe Biden’s proposals.
Trump’s ideas are marked by bringing a “massive deportation” to a significant group of career employees and pledging to “immediately stop the invasion” of the southern border. Moreover, his plan includes the immediate stop of the “endless flow of American treasure to Ukraine” and the urging of European allies to reimburse the U.S.
Trump also aims to establish a “Reciprocal Trade Act” and to eliminate or impose significantly higher tariffs on imported goods, with a special emphasis on China. He will also heavily increase drilling on U.S. public lands. He promises to end wind subsidies, to exit the Paris Climate Accords, and to eliminate regulations proposed by the Biden administration.
Trump plans to terminate the Department of Education and has said he will advocate for “patriotic education” and the promotion of “the nuclear family.” He vows to support school districts that allow trained teachers to possess concealed weapons to protect students.
On the subject of homelessness, Trump wishes to erect tent cities on large, open parcels of land and ban urban camping in certain areas. He also wants to bring back large mental institutions to reinstitutionalize those who are “severely mentally ill” or “dangerously deranged.” Moreover, he proposes using controversial policing measures such as stop-and-frisk in cities struggling with violence and empowering the local police to shoot suspected shoplifters in the act.
