In a potential blow to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, he may face a fourth criminal indictment this week. The grand jury in Georgia is close to making a final decision regarding allegations of interference in the 2020 presidential election.

During a campaign speech in New Hampshire, Trump admitted to expecting four indictments by the following week. The district attorney in Fulton County, Fani Willis, is anticipated to seek indictments in the case as early as this week, with barricades outside the courthouse suggesting imminent legal action.

Reuters briefly reported that a docket on the Fulton County court website indicated charges against Trump for racketeering, false statements, and conspiracy. However, the docket report became unavailable, and the DA’s office clarified that no indictment had been returned yet.

Willis is not only focusing on Trump; she could also bring charges against other defendants. Witnesses have been arranged to testify before the grand jury, as confirmed by Georgia’s former Republican lieutenant-governor Geoff Duncan and journalist George Chidi.

In an interview with local television station WXIA-TV, Willis stated that the groundwork for the case had been laid after two and a half years of work. This potential indictment in Georgia adds to the numerous legal challenges that Trump is already facing at the federal and state levels.

The investigation revolves around Trump’s attempts, along with his allies, to influence the Georgia vote in his favor after Joe Biden narrowly won the state. Trump infamously called Georgia’s secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, to find the votes necessary for his victory. However, Raffensperger refused, and Biden ultimately won the election.

Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his frustration with the ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, CNN reported that Trump’s legal team allegedly breached a rural Georgia county’s voting system to find evidence of widespread fraud prior to the events of January 6, 2021.

Former Texas congressman Will Hurd criticized Trump’s actions, describing them as an attempt to overturn an election and create a conspiracy. Special counsel Jack Smith, appointed by US attorney-general Merrick Garland, has obtained multiple indictments against Trump for various offenses related to the 2020 election.

Despite all these charges, Trump has pleaded not guilty, accusing prosecutors of pursuing a political vendetta to prevent him from running in the 2024 race. Fulton County sheriff Patrick Labat confirmed that local enforcement agencies are prepared to handle a potential indictment, emphasizing that all defendants are treated equally.

The Department of Justice’s charges against Trump and a potential Georgia indictment may intertwine, raising questions about how the cases will proceed. With multiple trials set to take place across the US, the outcome of these legal battles will likely impact next year’s presidential election.
