Potential Commanders name change: Magic Johnson declares that ‘everything is up for discussion’

The Washington Commanders have undergone a change in ownership, and there are speculations that they will have a new identity following the upcoming season. The team was purchased by NBA legend Magic Johnson and the Josh Harris-led group for a record-breaking $6.05 billion, a deal that received unanimous approval from NFL owners.

“It’s the biggest achievement of my life. It’s a dream come true,” said Johnson during an interview with the TODAY Show.

Johnson believes that the new ownership will bring positive changes for the Commanders fans, players, and employees. He mentioned that the group will be focused on turning the organization around and didn’t rule out the possibility of changing the team’s name in the future.

“We’re open to considering everything, especially after this year. We’ll assess the situation and see where we stand regarding the name,” Johnson stated.

The Commanders retired their previous name in 2020 due to concerns of insensitivity towards Native Americans. However, their new name received mixed reactions from fans, with some advocating for the team to permanently adopt the placeholder name, the Washington Football Team.

One of the pressing challenges for the Commanders’ long-term future is finding a new stadium to replace the aging FedEx Field. There is significant support for locating the new venue at the site of RFK Stadium, the team’s previous home in the capital city. Virginia previously abandoned a stadium bill, making the RFK Stadium site a strong contender.

The Washington Commanders are embarking on a new chapter with their ownership group, poised to make impactful changes both on and off the field.
