Ezekiel Elliott’s role with the New England Patriots could be up for discussion at the NFL trade deadline. It seems that teams in need of a running back have expressed interest in the star player.
According to a report by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, several teams have contacted the Patriots about the possibility of acquiring Elliott before the Tuesday deadline.
Elliott joined the Patriots in August on a one-year contract to provide depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson. So far, he has contributed with 260 rushing yards and two touchdowns in eight games.
Despite his modest stats, Elliott’s value lies in his ability to excel in short-yardage situations. For a contending team in need of an offensive boost at the running back position, he could be a valuable addition. However, it remains unclear what the Patriots may receive in return for him, likely a late-round pick given his current stage of career.
Trading Elliott, alongside Stevenson, who is also receiving carries this season, would leave the Patriots with limited options in the running back position. Nonetheless, with the team having a challenging season at 2-6, they may decide to take advantage of the trade market and secure value for Elliott.
The NFL trade deadline is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
