Postponement Highly Likely for Emmy Awards Amid Hollywood’s Dual Strike

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards have become casualties of the ongoing strike that has paralyzed Hollywood. As the Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA actors union continue their walkouts, Fox plans to postpone the Emmy Awards, originally scheduled for September 18, until January, according to the Los Angeles Times. An official announcement is expected soon, but with no signs of negotiations between the striking unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the postponement may face further delays.

If the postponement occurs, it will be the first time since 2001, following the September 11 attacks, that the Emmys have not taken place as scheduled. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA and WGA members continue to picket at major studios in the Los Angeles area.

Both the actors’ union and the WGA are fighting for similar demands, including revised formulas for streaming content residuals and safeguards against the use of artificial intelligence in film and TV production. The actors union has not gone on strike since 1980, while the WGA last went on strike for 100 days in 2007. This simultaneous strike by both unions is unprecedented since 1960.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers represents studios, networks, and streaming services, while the actors union represents around 160,000 performers.

Accusing the AMPTP of bargaining in bad faith, both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA were frustrated with the lack of progress in negotiations. When SAG-AFTRA announced its strike on July 14, union President Fran Drescher criticized the major studios for their greed, while the studios defended their “historic” benefit offerings. The AMPTP asserted that its goal was to create a new contract beneficial to all parties involved.

Once the strike is resolved and the Emmy Awards take place, the series “Succession” will lead the nominations with 27, followed by “The Last of Us” with 24, “The White Lotus” with 23, and “Ted Lasso” with 21.

The Daytime Emmy Awards, originally planned for June in downtown Los Angeles, were also delayed due to the writers’ strike, with a new date yet to be announced.
