Post-Devastation Woes: Exploring Housing Solutions for 2 Million Displaced Individuals in Gaza

This area of conflict in the Middle East has been failed by both regional and global powers. The recent attacks by Hamas on southern Israel have been relentless and brutal. These actions do nothing to further the Palestinian cause and will likely hinder any progress towards a peaceful resolution. The international community has completely failed in its efforts to negotiate a sustainable solution, resulting in the current dire situation.
Since 2007, the Gaza Strip has been under a blockade that has caused immense hardship for its civilian population. This blockade has allowed for the rise of extremism and religious fanaticism, exacerbating the political instability in the region. As Israel responds to these attacks, it is crucial that they abide by international law and ensure that further human rights abuses are not committed. The potential for a humanitarian crisis or a larger regional conflict is very real.
The Gaza Strip is incredibly small, comparable to the size of Ireland’s smallest county, Louth. Despite its small size, the population of the Gaza Strip is much larger, making the living conditions very cramped. It is our hope that reason and humanitarianism will prevail in this chaotic situation.
Egypt, given its history with Gaza, should play a role in resolving the Israel-Palestine crisis. The fact that the border between Gaza and Egypt remains closed to refugees is questionable. It is important to question why Gaza is dependent on Israel for its electricity and natural gas when it shares a border with Egypt. Could it be that Egypt sees Hamas as a dangerous terrorist organization and does not want to take in Palestinian refugees?
The West has made mistakes in its approach to autocratic regimes, as seen in the cases of Putin and Hamas. The policy of appeasement through increased trade has not worked. Putin deceived the West with promises of moderation, only to invade Ukraine in return for economic concessions. Similarly, Israel believed that trade with Hamas would improve their behavior, but instead, Hamas perpetrated acts of terrorism against Israel. It is time for the West to reconsider its approach to these regimes and not make concessions that only enable their bad behavior.
The images of children injured and traumatized by this conflict are deeply disturbing. It is difficult to comprehend the violence and suffering that is occurring. We can only hope and pray for an end to this madness.
The ongoing conflict in the Holy Land is rooted in a dark history of violence and colonialism. The people of Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, who come from the same ethnic group, have been torn apart by religious and political strife. This has been perpetuated by colonial powers and the British and French manipulation of the region. Both the Jewish and Muslim populations have legitimate claims to a homeland, but progress has been hindered by violence and external influences. It is time for a new approach that recognizes the rights and desires of all parties involved.
