Possible Threat to UK Air Traffic Control: French Airline’s Erroneous Travel Plan Raises Concerns, Implicating NATS and Prompting No.10 Attention; Stranded Passengers Mount

Downing Street has not ruled out the possibility that an inputting error by a French airline could be responsible for the recent air traffic control shutdown in the UK. Today, almost 300 more flights were cancelled, leading to warnings that travel chaos could continue for the rest of the week. Flight data analysis shows that a total of 281 flights were cancelled at the UK’s six busiest airports, including Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Stansted, Luton, and Edinburgh. The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) experienced “technical issues” yesterday, leading to the cancellations and delays of thousands of flights. It has been suggested that the shutdown may have been caused by an incorrectly filed flight plan by a French airline, although NATS has ruled out a cyber attack. An investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is currently underway. Transport Secretary Mark Harper has announced an “independent review” of the incident. Former editor of Air Traffic Management magazine, Sally Gethin, questioned NATS’ communication during the crisis, stating that the organization needs to improve its understanding of the core issues and communicate more effectively with the public. NATS has apologized for the disruptions and is working to clear the backlog of delayed and cancelled flights. A thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the cause and prevent similar incidents in the future.
