Possible Indictment Looming in January 6 Investigation

In a recent post on his Truth Social platform, former President Trump revealed that he has been informed about being targeted in the Justice Department’s investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Special counsel Jack Smith sent Trump a letter on Sunday confirming his status as a target in the Jan. 6 investigation. This is the second time Trump has received a target letter from Smith, with the first one being related to his handling of classified material and alleged obstruction of document recovery efforts. According to a source from the Times, Sunday’s letter suggests that another indictment of Trump might be imminent, although the specific charges he might face are unclear. Lawyers have speculated about the possibility of charges such as “attempted corrupt obstruction of an official proceeding” and “conspiracy to defraud the government.” The House panel investigating Jan. 6 has recommended charging Trump with inciting or assisting an insurrection, obstructing an official proceeding of Congress, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and conspiracy to make false statements. Trump claimed that he was given only four days to report to the Grand Jury, which typically indicates an arrest and indictment. He reiterated his belief that the investigation is a “witch hunt” and a misuse of law enforcement for political purposes. According to the former president, this is an unprecedented development in the country. Trump made these statements just hours before a pretrial hearing in Florida for the classified documents case. However, he will not be attending the hearing as he has a scheduled town hall taping with Fox News’ Sean Hannity in Iowa. (Read more Donald Trump stories.)
