Possible Ban of Barbie Dolls in the Philippines

Possible Screening Ban for ‘Barbie’ Film in the Philippines Due to Political and Geographical Inaccuracy

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board is currently evaluating Warner Brothers’ request to allow the screening of the upcoming Hollywood film ‘Barbie’ in Philippine theaters.

In their statement, they confirmed that the board reviewed the film ‘Barbie’ on July 4, 2023. The Committee on First Review is currently deliberating on Warner Brothers’ request for a Permit to Exhibit.

This review follows the call from senators to ban the film, which centers around the popular Mattel doll ‘Barbie,’ due to a scene that allegedly depicts China’s disputed claim over the South China Sea.

The controversial scene can be found in the trailer uploaded on Warner Bros. Pictures’ official YouTube account at the 2:41 minute mark. It shows blonde Barbie and lead actor Margot Robbie conversing with ‘Weird Barbie’ played by Kate McKinnon about the real world outside Barbie Land. In the scene, a child’s drawing of the world map is displayed, presenting Asia as a single landmass without indicating China or the Philippines.

This film, directed by Greta Gerwig, faced a ban in Vietnam for featuring a map that showcases China’s claim over the South China Sea.

‘Barbie’ is scheduled to release in Philippine cinemas on July 19, 2023.
