Porsche Commits to Manufacturing Petrol Engine-Powered 911 for the Long Term

In order to preserve the exhilaration of driving the roaring engine, a senior executive at Porsche has assured that the best-selling 911 model will continue to be powered by a petrol engine for as long as possible. Karl Dums, the executive, stated that the iconic sports car will be the last one to be electrified by the German automaker.

The race to transition from petrol and diesel engines to electric power is causing a concern for sports car manufacturers who fear that the thrill of driving will be compromised with the introduction of quiet electric engines. However, in March, the European Union granted German and Italian car makers the permission to continue producing combustion engines after 2035, on the condition that they utilize greener fuels.

Porsche, while aiming for 80% of its sales to consist of battery-powered cars by 2030, plans to keep the 911 model with a combustion engine that burns a synthetic and greener version of petrol called “e-fuel.” This e-fuel, produced by Porsche using hydrogen and green energy, emits 90% less CO2 than regular petrol. The company has made a $75 million investment in a test refinery in Chile, which currently produces only 130,000 liters per year, compared to the global daily consumption of hundreds of millions of liters of petrol.

In addition to the 911, Porsche will electrify its SUV Macan model, followed by the 718 and Cayenne models. However, the production of their only electric vehicle, the Taycan EV, has been impeded by supply-chain issues. Problems in sourcing parts, such as high voltage heaters, resulted in a 5% decrease in Taycan EV deliveries during the first half of this year.
