Poll Reveals 40% of Canadians Favor Pierre Poilievre as Ideal Choice for PM – National Survey

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s support in the polls remains strong, with 40% of Canadians considering him the best choice for prime minister, according to a recent Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News. This marks a five-point increase in Poilievre’s favorability compared to a year ago. In contrast, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s support has remained stagnant at 31% year-over-year. According to Ipsos CEO Darrell Bricker, this gap indicates that the Conservatives could potentially secure a majority government if an election were held today.

Bricker noted that Canadians are dissatisfied with the country’s direction, particularly regarding key issues like the cost of living, housing, and inflation. These concerns reflect deeper economic worries. The Ipsos poll also revealed a drop of four points in the number of respondents who believe NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is the best choice for prime minister since September 2022, with only 22% support.

On crucial issues such as the economy, healthcare, and housing, Poilievre’s plans were deemed the most favorable by a plurality of Canadians. The poll showed that Poilievre’s support extends to every province and region except for Quebec, where Trudeau remains the preferred choice for prime minister.

Looking at specific regions, Poilievre leads in Ontario with 42% support compared to Trudeau’s 38%. Bricker anticipates that the suburbs will be a key battleground in the next election, as the Conservative Party struggles in downtown areas but remains competitive in car-commuting suburbs surrounding cities like Toronto. In Atlantic Canada, Poilievre currently enjoys a significant lead over Trudeau, with 48% of respondents believing he would make the best prime minister.

The poll suggests that Trudeau’s leadership may be in question, as 60% of Canadians believe it’s time for him to step aside and allow someone else to lead the Liberal Party into the next election. This sentiment has increased from 54% in a December 2022 poll. Currently, the Liberals have a supply and confidence agreement with the NDP, who have agreed to support the government on confidence matters until the fall of 2025. However, 53% of respondents believe it’s time for the NDP to stop supporting the Liberals and trigger an election.

The Ipsos poll was conducted between September 15 and 18, with 1,500 respondents representing Canada’s population demographics. The margin of error for this poll is +/- 2.9%, suggesting a high level of accuracy. This content is copyrighted by Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc.
