Police: Texas Uber Driver Fatally Shot by Woman Fearful of Kidnapping in Mexico

A tragic incident unfolded in El Paso, Texas, where a Kentucky woman visiting the area allegedly shot her Uber driver under the mistaken belief that he was kidnapping her and driving her to Mexico. The woman, Phoebe Copas, 48, who was on her way to a casino to meet her boyfriend, reportedly panicked after seeing road signs for Juarez. She then pulled out a handgun and shot her driver, Daniel Piedra Garcia, 52, in the head. The vehicle ultimately crashed into a concrete barrier. Copas took a photo of the scene and sent it to her boyfriend before calling 911. Piedra was rushed to the hospital but tragically died after being taken off life support. Copas has been arrested and faces charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and murder. Investigators have stated that there is no evidence to support the claim of a kidnapping or that Piedra was deviating from Copas’ intended destination.

Didi Lopez, Piedra’s niece, believes that negative assumptions about the southern U.S. border may have influenced Copas’ state of mind. Lopez suggests that individuals who come to the border region often bring misconceptions based on media and social media representations. Piedra was passionate about driving for Uber, providing for his family, and meeting new people. Copas’ bond has been set at $1.5 million.

It is a heartbreaking incident that reminds us of the need for caution and a deeper understanding of the facts before jumping to conclusions.
